TRADITIONAL GAME OF INDONESIA

Probably, congklak is one of the most popular traditional games in Indonesia. It has some different names. Inpost part of Yogyakarta children call it dhakon. In Lampung and many otjer regions in South Sumatra children call it dentuman lamban. Children in Sulawesi know this game as makaotan, maggaleceng, aggalacang and nogarata. Congklak itself has its name from the cowrie shells children use to play.

The most interesting fact is that in some places congklak is not just a children game. It has close relation with culture. For example, long time ago in Sulawesi people played congklak right after someone died. It was inappro Central Java used this game to calculate the seasons, to find out the right time to plant and hrvest. They also predicted the future using this game.

Although congklak is very popular in Indonesia but some strong evidence shows that congklak is very popular originated in many other places with the most ancient culture. People in most countries in Africa know this game as Wari. Some findings in Jordan, Middle East, have proved that people already played congklak around 9000 years ago. These findings do not only make congklak as the most popular game but also the oldest game in human civilization.

  1. WE WILL NOT GO DOWN (Song for Gaza)

    Composed by Michael Heart

    Copyright 2009

A blinding flash of white light
Lit up the sky over Gaza tonight
    People running for cover
Not knowing whether they're dead or alive

They came with their tanks and their planes
    With ravaging fiery flames
    And nothing remains
Just a voice rising up in the smoky haze

    We will not go down
In the night, without a fight
You can burn up our mosques and our homes and our schools
But our spirit will never die
    We will not go down
    In Gaza tonight

    Women and children alike
Murdered and massacred night after night
While the so-called leaders of countries afar
Debated on who's wrong or right

But their powerless words were in vain
And the bombs fell down like acid rain
But through the tears and the blood and the pain
You can still hear that voice through the smoky haze

    We will not go down
In the night, without a fight
You can burn up our mosques and our homes and our schools
But our spirit will never die
    We will not go down
    In Gaza tonight

    TRSDITIONAL DANCES

Indonesia has many traditional dances, every ethnic group has more than two kinds of dances. Each of them tells the spectators about a ballad or a story according to the kind or the place of the ethnic group. The Balinese dances, for example.”Legong” tell about the love story of the Lase King, and Kecak tells about the Hanoman’s and Sugriwo’s monkey troops.

Most of the spectators usually enjoy the dance for the beauty, the costume and the action of the dancer only. They don’t care the message of the dance. Every action of the dancer, how ever, expresses a guidance. It guides us how to do the best attitude and behaviour in our life. We sometimes neglect it, for instance, part action of Javanese Dance. Before the dancer moves or steps her foot, she makes her hand around in front of her body, move a hand to the left or right side then turn it trought in front of her head down to chest to the first position. This action expresses – before someone does something, it’s better to consider. Throw away something bad and take the best one.

Our own traditional dance has a deep philosophy. It shows the national identity, Indonesia. We should attempt to keep it if we don’t want to lose it.
